Jupiter is the 5th planet from the Sun and the largest of the planets and one of two gas giant planets in our Solar System.
Jupiter is an oblate spheroid, which is quite noticeable in a telescope, but, in Orbiter, it is modeled as a sphere.
Jupiter is frequently used as a slingshot to boost the speed of spacecraft enroute to bodies beyond Jupiter to realize a huge savings on fuel.
Orbital characteristics[edit]
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun located after Mars beyond the main asteroid belt. It orbits the Sun at about 5.2 astronomical units with an eccentricity of about 0.048 and an inclincation of about 1.3°. It orbits the Sun in just under 12 years (4332 days).
Physical characteristics[edit]
Jupiter is just under 140000 km diameter, or about 11 times that of Earth, with a mass of about 1.9×1027 kg, or about 317 times that of Earth.
Jupiter in Orbiter[edit]
Jupiter has been a part of Orbiter since the earliest versions. In Orbiter 2001, Jupiter's orbit was defined in the Jupiter.cfg file and had no moons. but, in Orbiter 2002 onward, its orbit was defined in the Vsop87.dll file, and the four Galilean moons were added, and has been so ever since. A large number of moons are available as add-ons.
